1st Aid training is for everyone!

It's been a while since I have been on a 1st Aid Course... I think the last one was when I was in the scouts! So I thought it time to go on a refresher...

Antony Joyce (Link4Business member) had arranged this particular one day course as he is often running camping events where 1st aid is paramount. This got me thinking as the day progressed who actually needs to know this stuff?

  • Anyone with kids and / or a partner or family
  • Anyone working with other people
  • Anyone responsible for events that people attend
  • Anyone that goes outside into public spaces
  • Anyone who would like to help others who are in trouble
  • Anyone around people who aren't able to take care of themselves

That's about everyone really... we all ought to have a reasonable grasp of what to do in a whole range of situations... from stepping on a nail, anaphylaxis, wounds and bleeding, burns, right through to someone clearly struggling with a possible heart condition, strokes, unconsciousness, or in shock.

None of what we did was particularly challenging to be honest, much of it is common sense too, but there is a lot of it. I thought that filling a whole day was a tad optimistic but we ended up almost rushing through a few bits to finish on time.

It's about taking responsibility

I harp on about people taking responsibility all the time, but this is yet another area where we could quite easily improve ourselves. Knowing what to do when something happens is really important. At one extreme we could save a life with an efficient and effective response... at the other; be a calming and reassuring voice in a simple abrasion situation.

If all those that were capable had this knowledge, such as what an AED unit is, and where the nearest one can be accessed such that it could be brought into a 'life / death' situation in a timely fashion, how amazing would that be?

Every minute delay in applying effective treatment in a cardiac arrest situation reduces the patients chances by 10% ... after 7 minutes the ability to make a recovery becomes dire indeed... time is of the utmost importance.

Do you know people with Diabetes? ... we all do these days and yet if they get either Hyper or Hypo... would you know what to do?

First Aid

Being the first on the scene, we are responsible for taking the 1st step... the surgeons, doctors, specialists, ambulance and paramedics... they all come later... but if the 1st step is in the wrong direction then everything else might go wrong too... this is vital stuff... the people on the scene of any situation are the 'First Response Unit' ... and yet... few of us have had any training at all...

Final Words

I've been meaning to take a refresher course for ages, but there was always something I put higher up the list... for £20 or £35 or even £40 this is really crucial for all of us... If I was to fall over or become unconscious at one of our events I would hope that someone there had recently been on a 1st aid course, would you?

Thank you Tony for organising this... and if this has inspired anyone to organise a similar event near where you are then that is a good thing... this is something where we can't have too many qualified people!
